At the end of January 2021, the SMOOTH Project comes to end, but our tools and community will keep supporting MENTs in being GDPR compliant!
SMOOTH AND THE FUTURE OF THE GDPR
Research suggests that micro-enterprises often lack resources in terms of time, finance, people, and knowledge to properly understand and apply the GDPR requirements, leaving them exposed to involuntary breaches and fines. The adoption of the GDPR by micro-enterprises (MENTs) effortlessly, without incurring unnecessary costs, is fundamental to the EU global economy. According to a report of 2019, 41% of companies declared that satisfying GDPR norms gave them a competitive advantage, while 42% of businesses mentioned increasing innovation standards.
The SMOOTH project has aimed to assist micro-enterprises in adopting and being compliant with the GDPR by creating and performing easy-to-use and affordable tools, analysing their level of compliance with the new data protection regulation.
These tools allow small businesses to adopt GDPR smoothly without incurring in additional costs, safeguarding the interests of the EU data subjects and creating awareness on the importance of being GDPR compliant (71% of people in the EU heard about their national data protection authority, according to a survey from the EU Fundamental Rights Agency).

THE HANDBOOK
SMOOTH has also created an online GDPR Handbook to help small businesses navigate the complexities of the legislation. You can find it here: https://www.gdprhandbook.eu/ (Android App here; iOS App here)
It explains the critical aspect of the regulations, defining its specific domain, where it applies, and to whom. It helps clarify the different facets and specificities, providing examples of different scenarios and the correct course of action.
It covers the basic and essential applications, defining the key roles of the different processes. These include business actors as well as public authorities, liken privacy authorities and data controllers. It also provides the general framework in which GDPR entwines with national privacy regulations.
